A Save the Environment campaign was held recently to clean up the Subang Ria Park recently.

The event was initiated by the Women Development Organisation of Malaysia (WDO) Subang Jaya branch chairman Stacey Teh Poi See, and co-organised by the Subang Jaya Senior Citizens Club, Subang Jaya Song Ling Choir and USJ5 Sam & Grace Line Dance Group.

Clean up: Residents working together to pick up the rubbish.

Kelana Jaya parliamentary constituency coordinator and Kelana Jaya MCA chairman Ong Chong Swen launched the event.

More than 70 people turned up and were divided into 10 groups to collect garbage in the park.

About 20 bags of garbage were collected, including beer bottles and cans, food and drink packaging.

Ong said to save the environment, one should start from within and develop several green habits.According to her, these habits included not wasting anything, car pooling, recycling and, especially, not wasting food.

“We should also set an example at home and at the work place,” Ong said.

“It is important to educate children when they are young, because they can influence their peers to help build an environment-friendly township.”

She also praised those who took part in the awareness programme, and thanked them for sacrificing their time to help the environment.

When asked about residential development at the park, Ong said: “I was one of the pioneers who moved into this township and the brochure showed a beautiful lake.

“Though the developer has since changed hands, its social responsibility and commitment should remain,” she said.
