在庆祝母亲节的同时，让我们回顾母亲节的来由。

最早是的母亲节是由古希腊人，为了荣耀希腊诸神之母—— Rhea 而开始的节庆。

后关于母亲节的最早记载是在美国1872年，由莱利亚（Julia Ward Howe及The Battle Hymn Of The Republic的作者）所提出的。再由费城的安娜（Ana Juruif）在1907年说服了母亲所属的教会，在她母亲二周年忌日——五月的第二个星期天举办母亲节庆祝活动。

威尔逊总统于1914年发表官方声明让母亲节成为全国性的节日，就是5月的第二个星期日。

十七世纪英格兰，为表达对英国母亲们的敬意，乃订四旬斋的第四个星期日为「Mothering Sunday」，人们在这一天回家探视双亲，并致礼表示敬意。全世界多数国家，都在五月的第二个星期日庆祝母亲节。

In 1868 Ann Jarvis created a committee to establish a "Mother's Friendship Day" whose purpose was "to reunite families that had been divided during the Civil War”, her daughter Anna Jarvis continue her mother's efforts following the death of her mother.

Jarvis campaigned to establish Mother's Day as a U.S. national holiday. On May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation declaring the first national Mother's Day.
